Context Clues and Your Reading

This week we have been talking about using context clues to figure out unfamiliar words and confusing passages while you’re reading.

Today, your task is to answer the questions:
  1. Why is it important to identify and understand words you didn’t know?
  2. How does increasing your vocabulary help your understanding of the world around you?
  3. List 3 (or more) words from your PCR book that you used context clues to give meaning to, and explain how that helped you understand the book more completely.
  4. What do you think this mean – “You can never use a new word until you ‘own’ it.”

Blog entry Rubric:
Proficient
– 2 paragraphs entered in class blog about their this week using context clues consciously, during their entry students must utilize at least 3 new words that they learned from reading this week
Non- Proficient – less than 2 paragraphs entered in class blog, students use less than 3 new words that they learned this week from reading

**Once your blog entry is completed, read this short selection. **

It is important to identify words you don't know because you could come across them again and when or if you do you already know what the word means. If you increase your vocabulary it will give you a better aspect on life. You will grasp more things in your life and understand books that you probally couldn't understand before.

Words that I found in my book that stood out was guru which I think means the person is like a boss of the town or where ever the person is. Also another word was halt. I think this word means to stop or pause. “You can never use a new word until you ‘own’ it.” I dont eactly know what that means.

1.it helps you understand the feeling of the people talking in the story also gives you a better discription.
2.people in the world use different words discribe whats going on in the world and sometime we dont understand but by increasing your vocabulary you will be able to understand those words.
3.disheartened-means sad or heartbroken
clench-means tense or in a tight problem or trying to hold in pain.
plunge-to go forward or into with power or force.
by knowing these words it help me understand the feelings of the characters in the book.
4.well that little quote to me means you cant use a word you dont fully understand like most words have double meaning so thats why its say you can use a word until you fully own it if you dont know the meaning of the word you really shouldnt be using it.

Its is imporant to identify and understand words you didnt know so that you can understand what your reading and for future refrence when the word may be used again in, text, conversation or to sound smarter. Knowing bigger words with good meanings is good for college applications and impressive when you are talking to some one like a teacher or employer. A word i learned from my book was "Cadeau" which was sited in my book "The Poison Bible" on page 17. I gatherd that the meaning of this word was a gift or neccesty. I came to that conclusion because a character in my book named Leah who is approced by the africans during her visit and they ask her "Cadeau?" Leah says " I held up my hands to illustrate the total & complete lack of gifts". Another word that i already knew in my book was incidentally which means ironicly. Another person that may have not known the word could have guessed that the meaning was ironic because Rubby says that in the rush of everything she didnt have to use the bathroom untill they were on the plain on there 6 hour flight and she didnt like using the plane bathrooms. My third word I learned from my book was "Gallimaufry" which im guessing means mistake or has imprefections. This word comes up on page 34 in my book when leahs twin is talking about how her and Leah may be twins but are complete opposites. Leahs twin was born with some brain damge and doesnt work as fast as others her age. On page 34 she says " But I'am a lame gallimaufry & she remains perfect. I think the quote "You can never use a new word untill you own it" means that you cant go around using that word if you dont fully unterstand the meaning of it. Like if you went around calling everyone jerks just because your heard it but you didnt understand that thats not the proper way to adress people.

Ok with my book I pretty much know all the words in my book so far. So I thought of some words in my book that people who know nothing about war. Because not all people are into war they know nothing at all about it. Some people don't want to know about it they keep it out of their minds. My first word has something to do with nicknames. In every war we usually call our enemies something. Like in the Vietnam war we called the Viet Congs Vc for sort or mybe even for code.
My secound word has something to do with what the military uses for transportation or even combat. Choppers are helicopters usually used for transporting troops back and forth to the battle feild. Sometimes they have machine guns and missles attached incase they encounter any enemies. Last but not least Molotov Cocktails these bottles of liquir were stuffed with cloth and lite on fire. and thrown at the enemy to kill or to clear area of tall grass or plants. and that how my week of context clues went still looking for more words though that aothers don't or wouldn't know.

I think that it is important to understand or figure out the meaning to words you didnt know because it helps you figure out what it is that there talking about in your book and helps to understand what it is that is going on in the book. It is good to increase your vocabulary today because there are alot of placse including ceartin jobs and all schools were they use higher vocabulary and without knowing any you wouldnt be able to understand anything their talking about.
3 words that i definded using context clues were Agitated:Angry, Lurking:Hanging Around, and Hordes:Handful or a bunch. These helped me understand the bok more completly because by knowing what these terms meant i knew eactly what my characters were talking about or trying to say, and for me to fully understand what im reading i need to figure out what the words i dont know mean.
Basically what that quote is trying to say is that if you dont know the meaning to a word you cant use it. You cant just use any word in a sentence without knowing the meaning of it because it will end up not making any sense. To use a word in any case you hav to know the meaning so you can make sure you use it the proper way it is suppose to be used.

i think it is important to use contex clues when reading or listening to stuff. they help you to understand and figure out unknown words. truefully i think the more words you know the smarter u are. i also think people should try to figure out and learn any word thgey hear and dont know. this would increse there vocabulary and give them a better understanding of stuff that goes on in the world.

the past week while reading my pcr book i used contex clues to figure out the meanings atleast 10 words. Some where crooked, gaze, and metropoliton. crooked is lopsided or bent, gaze means to stare, and metropoliton means not populated. contex clues can help with a lot of understandings.

If you dont understand the words you are reading then you dont really understand what you are reading at all. You need to be able to picture the objects the books are describing and you will not be able too do that if you do not comprehend certain words. By increasing your vocabulay i believe you can better yourself. It comes in handy and makes things in life clear to you. When your going to school knowing more vocabulary helps you alot. You need it for reading and writing. You also use it for state tests such as the HSPA and the SAT's. Some words from my pcr book, The Joy Luck Club, are prolong, gruel, nubby, unanimously, and unbearable. "You can never use a new word until you own it" I think that means that you cant't use a word if you dont know what it means. You need to understand it, know the meaning, know how to use it in sentences before you can acually say it and let it have the honor of coming out of your mouth.

It important to identify words your not sure of because many times when your reading a book in you dont understand the words you dont get what the book is actually about.Another explame is words on a test or application you might be filling out,if you dont know what they mean you might not be able to finish or write the wrong answer. When you increase you vocab. on words it get you far in life, for example if you have an job interview for an office or high class job your extended vocab. makes them think you know what your talking about and most likely get the job cause of your intelligents.

it's always important to know and understand words.it's important because if you dont know some of these words it will be harder to indentify the text, thats why you should use context clues.increasing your vocabulary helps you better in the world.the reason why is because it you dont know one word it can throw off your whole text and you could get confused. It's always better to increase your vocabulary because you use it everyday.

There were alot of words in my PCR book that some people might not know the meanings of.So i used context clues to help me figure out the meanings. For example "eneveloped in the exhaust fumes that plumed the cab's tailpipe..." i fought out the meaning of fumes by seeings the word tailpipe.

It is important to identify and understand words you didn’t know, because sometimes a word confuses you. Thats leaves some people frusterated, when you want to read something, but cant really understand it. Increasing your vocabulary helps your understanding of the world around you because sometimes a bigger word is needed. For an example, when at a job interview, you might want to use bigger words. That would make you sound more professional.

It is important to understand and identify words i didnt know for many reasons. One reason is , so i couldnt understand what im reading and not be stuck wondering what the word means. And i could identify it so when the word comes up later on i will understand what it means. Increasing your vocabulary helpls you understand the world around you because you will know much more meanings to large vocab word, and knowing more gets you further in life.
And for #3 i wasnt here ,so i couldnt answer the question. I think this quote “You can never use a new word until you ‘own’ it” means 1 things. One thing is

I think it is important to understand words you dont know in a story or artical becuase you might be missing out on something important in the reading

Increasing your vocabulary helps you understand the world around you becuase the more words you understand the better you can understand a story, artical, novels, ect. and talk more fluently in english or any language.

Ferret - To get rid of something; If i had not known what the word ferret ment i would not have known that they were getting rid of something.

Commotion - Problems, or something going on noisey;if had not known what commotion ment i would not have known that their was something going on something wrong and that also could affect the tone where you are reading you may not understand the tone.

Clenched - To tightly Grasp something hold tightly;if i had not known what clenched meant i would not uderstand that part of the story and would not have known that they were grasping something.

I think the Quote "You can never use a new word until you know it" means basicaly what it says if you don't know what the word means you can't say and soulden't say it until you find out what it means.

It is important to understand words you don't know or are unfamiliar with is mainly because it can increase your vocabulary. Also it give you a better understanding of what you're reading. When you're increasing your vocabulary, you learn a new way of saying something. You are learning to sound more professional and you are more flexiable in conversations. It helps with understanding the world around us because of the varieties of accents and languages used in our vocabulary today. Many words that we use today are from across the world.
In this book I am reading called, "Black Swan Green" it's about a young boy. I believe he's from England because of the words he uses throughout the text. Words like "chomp", "blotted" and "swiveled" aren't used in the "American Vocabulary". The word "chomp" probably means a clutch of teeth, "blotted" could mean to make a spot and "swiveled" might mean to walk over in a pattern. I'm not one hundred percent sure if those are the actual meanings of the words. I had to use context clues to try and figure out what they meant. "You can never use a new word until you 'own' it" means that you shouldn't be trying to use a word you don't understand or even know what it means.

Its important to idenify words you dont know because it help you understand what they mean.It help you to understand the story. when you increase you vocabulary it help you sound educated. When you sound educated people would want you to work for them. For example you are told to go to the dinner party that your boss is haveing at the job. When you get there and you start talking to people. With low vocabulary your not going to know what they are saying. The reason why i say this is because when you get a job they are looking for people with high education. Not with people thats are still on a basic 9th grade level.

The reason why it is important to identify the words is so that we can be able to know how the words sound or what they mean. If you increase your vocabulary is learning more about words and finding out what they mean. The reason it helps you around the world is because we need to know words to get jobs or something.

I think its important that we learn new words because you may need them or future refrences. Also because you can’t live your life no knowing what most words mean, it help us out with our engilsh and speaking to. The more vocabulary you know the better. There are great jobs out there that takes a lot of hard work and big words, and if you don’t know what them words mean how you gonna get by.
Three words I used from my PCR book are menacingly, revealing and wondrous. Context clues helped me to understand the book better because the words I didn’t know I now do know and it gives me more information about what the characters are saying to each other.

I find it important to understand the vocabulary. The way a person talk is the way you can understand the ways and the feel of the topic. If a person were to say to you I feel bad well there are lot of kinds pain and feeling to a person. This is the reason why a should have a high vocabulary so that if they understand you they like a doctor could act right away.

Aimlessly-I thought that it would be used to show no real given direction
The word itself gave it away
Recollection-I thought that it stood for a memory and a given mind on the topic
Separating – I thought that this one could b used in as in splitting a object in two

I think its important to identify and understand words I don't know because I may come across them again in life. I can't read a word and not understand what it means to me because that means I don't know what Im reading. These words I come across that I don't know are very important for me to learn. They may help me in the near future when understanding things. For exmaple if I have a conversation with someone and they say a word I don't understand I will be lost. Thats why its so important to identify and get to understand a word that you don't know.
Increasing your vocabulary helps you understand alot that going on in the world around you. Theres alot of big words you may not know that will be used in the real world. Its important to be aware and get to know alot of words you dont know, because if your at work and assigned to do something but your not familiar with words, you will totally be losted. Also what I think the quote up above means is that you can never say a new word unless you know what that word means.
