Walking in Antony's Shoes

As you know, we have been reading William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, a play that deals with major human issues like loyalty, revenge, and power. We just finished the death of Julius Caesar and Mark Anonty’s speech to the people of Rome, a speech that is so heavily laced with irony and the rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos) that it convinced all of the citizens to believe in his cause. Today, you will be comparing yourself to Mark Antony.

Your Task Today:
Rewrite Anonty’s speech from Act III, Scene II in modern language.

Steps to Take/Questions to Consider:
Step 1- Think about Anonty’s Position. What would you do if you were in his shoes?
Step 2 – Re-read and evaluate Anonty’s speech. How would this speech be different if it were given today?
Step 3 – Rewrite the speech in today’s language as YOU would write it. How can you convert the speech to today’s language while still maintaining the heavy uses of irony and ethos, pathos, and logos?

Rubric for Assignment:
Proficient – the speech is rewritten in modern language, yet still maintains the major points and integrity of the speech, the re-written speech is at least 3 paragraphs long and is well-written with proper grammar and strong vocabulary words
Non-Proficient – The speech is not rewritten in modern language, nor does it maintain the major points or integrity of the speech, the speech is less than 3 paragraphs and does not use proper grammar or a strong vocabulary

Bonus Question (only to be answer if speech is re-written) – In Julius Caesar, Brutus is able to convince the “ignorant masses” relatively quickly, and then Antony is able to convince them just as quickly to agree with him, a completely opposite opinion. With this is mind, what do you think Shakespeare is saying about the rhetoric in our lives?

excuse me all. Im here to say a few words for my best friend and fellow polictian . A man who tryed his best to anwser the peoples crys and wants. He defended and served rome as a fair man. Brutus who called him self one of casers beloved friends, who calls him self loyal has slayen with other supposible 'friends' of caser. In his defence he says it was because caser was to 'ambitious.' but where i ask is his proof. Can any of you give me an example were caser seemed to be ambitous to you? Most if not all of you were there when i offerd a crown for caser to rule rome as a king, three times he denyed the crown, three times. Caser protected rome and us romans with out fear, not for self gradatude for the safty of us all! so i ask where is the proof of his ambitoin? If you ask me i call brutus the ambitous one in this! How can a man who is supposed to be a honerable man and who calld him self a loyal friend kill a one of his 'beloved friend.' with out any real reason of evidence just on assumtion. But if you all cant see this as the truh maybe the chants you were all saying before were right , brutus is a 'honerable man'. I cant be sure of alot in this world , but i give my word to YOU honerable people that caser reall did respect and care for you all.

People,Romans,Visitors hear me your ears. I came hear to put Ceaser in the ground, not to pay my respects. The bad things people do people remember and the good they do is not looked at. The genuis Brutus has told you that Ceasar was hungry for power. If this is true, it was Ceasars own fualt. Ceaasar has payed the price. I will leave the rest up to Brutus, since he is a good person. They are all good people. I wass the only one to come speak at Ceasars funeral. He was friend, and respected just me; But Brutus says he was hungry for power and Brutus is a good person.

Hey everyone look up and listen.
As I bury him in blasphemy.
The evil done will be passed from him.
The good from him given
So now let all this be by Caesar laying here
Brutus a noble man say that he was power hungry.
If it was true let it be a personal defect
Caesar has answered this.
Here underneath Brutus and you all
Brutus is the honorable man
All of them are honorable
I speak hear at Caesar’s funeral
He was my friend he was truthful to me
But still Brutus says he was hungry for power,
He brought many captives here to his home of Rome,
Those whose ransoms general coffers fill.
Now I ask you does his sound ambitious?
When the poor cried Caesar cried
Ambition is made f stronger stuff.
But still Brutus says he was ambitious,
Brutus an honorable man.
You all did see that on Lupercal
I offered the crown 3 times,
But he refused it 3 times. Is that ambition?
But Brutus said he was,
And he is honorable.
I don’t speak to prove Brutus wrong,
I speak here today of what I know of Caesar.
You all loved him with cause
So I ask what holds you not to mourn for him?
Judgment is that of brutish beast,
Men have lost all reason. Bear with me
My heart is that of the coffin of Caesar
I must wait till it comes back.

Hey peoplee my fellow people. Dont think of me as a bad person, I have not come to talk down on my friend Ceaser. I have come to bury the kid. He was a noble king, helped the poor and was willing to change, until his death came among us. Brutus is an honrable man, trust him my friends of rome. He will lead you to greater things to become of us...That is all!
