Anton Chekhov: Gossip's Impact on Society

One of the big ideas in the story A Slander by Anton Chekhov has to do with gossip. Gossip is something that most of us deal with in our lives all the time, but we often fail to think about its impact on the people around us or why we partake in it.

For this blog entry, consider the following questions:
  1. Why do you think the wedding guests do not believe Ahinyenev’s story about the kiss?
  2. Do you think they prefer scandal?
  3. Do you think this quickness to gossip is a common human trait? Why or why not?

When answering the questions, be sure to use examples from the story and your life to support your reasoning.

I think this story is stupid. Just like drama, gossip, slander whatever you would like to call it. Gossip is like a drug, everyone needs it one way or another. But in my opinion it is stupid, pointless and a waste of time. It only happens because people are bored with their own life or wants attention.

Drama is mainly caused by females. Males cause it to but where do you hear most drama? From females right..thought so. Drama isnt something that jus falls out the sky or rolls around in the hall. It comes from a source. Some people feed into it just to be cool, follow the crowd or just to be known for something. Mainly something dumb, drama has rules but of course they all get broken some how some way. Gossip and drama teaches you to choose your friends or who you call your friends wisely. It shows you who you can trust and who you can't.

Gossip is a waste of time and its stupid! Point blank period.

the people at the wedding didnt believe him about the kiss. They didnt believe him cause he thought his friend told everyone. but really he went around telling everyone not to believe people if they say he kissed the cook cause he didnt. he really didnt kiss her but he tried so hard to cover up the lies he made people believe that he didnt,he was trying too hard.

all people are different so some people jus like hearing bs n rumors and adding on to them and stuff but some people just dont like that stuff. a lot of people that have had rumors spread about them dont like hearing rumors and dont add to them, but some just spread rumors more because of that. (not enough time)

1.the weddong guest dont believe him because hes being so defensive about the slander so people think hes trying to cover himself up.
2.because its a good slander and people are interested in knowing if its true.
3.its not part of the human trait only surtain people choose to slnader because they have no life or no better thing to do.Somepeople do it because they are mad or jealous...HATERS..also slanders to make you look bad and them look better.

1.I think that the people at the wedding din't believe him because he went around saying that he didn't do it. He kind of made himself look like he did something. In the story sergei started to tell everyone he didn't do it and he could have kept quit. No one was saying anything about what they thought he did.
2.Yes i think people prefer a scandal because if gives them something to talk about. Then they can tell other people. Next it starts to spread. People like scandals because its big news to them.
3. I think the quickness to gossip is a human trait. Nobodys is perfect on this earth. Everbody at some point will gossip. It's just our human instinct to gossip.

The reason I think the wedding guests don't beleive Ahineyev's story about the kiss is beacause he's telling everybody that he didn't kiss her and if Vankin comes up and said he did don't believe him. When really he's telling on hisself making it seem like he really did because no one never even knew about the incident in the kitchen until he said something. So now everybody thinking the kiss with him and the cook Marfa is true. They all think Ahineyev is just trying to cover up what he did. So thats why the wedding party guess dono't believe Ahineyev's story about the kiss with him and Marfa.

Well I actuall don't think alot of people prefer scandal, but I do think some do. Because people that have no life will love to conversate and talk about someone's else life that's doing something with it. Just like the quote "Misery Loves Company' and I think that quote is very valid. The reason I think it's valid is because when you have nothing going with your life and just slowly going down the drain you try to bring people down with you. Beacuse you try not to feel all alone, so you will love to gossip and have a scandal with people to try to bring that person down and make them feel like you do. Some people just like the scandal just to make someone feel worst than they do.

Yes, I do think this quickness gossip is a human trait. The reason I said that is because I believe everybody has came across a time in there life when they gossiped about something or someone. Honestly I can admit I have once or maybe twice, and learned from my mistakes. I put myself in there shoes, and imagine how would I feel If people gossiped about me. Even though I know people did because its a common trait. You may have gossiped about someone with out even knowing; just being in a conversation and saying things here in there about the topic and you don't even know whats going on, or whether it's true or not. So with that being said yes, I do think it's a common human trait.

The people at the wedding didnt believe Ahineyer story because he was saying that he didnt kiss her when nobody even knew about it.I think it is a human trait because most people dont have anything else to talk about. Some people feel the need to tell what some body told them or they want their friends to know what they know about whats going on.

1.They didnt believe him because the way he handled the situation. Him going around trying to make up a lie because he thought that little situation would get around, made it seem obvious he was lying. So they took the story for what it really seemed like and didnt believe him about the kiss.
2. I dont know if they prefer that because it really was him who brought everything on himself. The town only knew about the situation because he went around tellling people and adding more lies to the lie he had already made.
3. No matter where you go there is always going to be some type of gossip around you. This story really does show how gossip actually starts in the real world and how it creates problems. It starts off with a misundertsnading then people go talking and it multiplys and by the time it gets to the person its about its a whole complete diffrent thing then what it began with. It is a common human trait because people everyday start gossip and drama when it really was nothing to begin with.
